Lago Retba |
The pink lake whose original name is Lac Retba or Lac Rose, covers a surface of 3 square km in the North-East of the capital of this African country, Dakar. The water of this lake has a saline concentration of 40 %, which allows to float in it. The explanation to its color is that it is believed to be caused by the presence of algae, such as Dunaliella salina, accustomed to living in extreme environments. These algae are protected from the conditions of radiation, salinity and temperature of the environment producing big quantities of carotenoids, very much used in the cosmetic industry.
Lago Hillier |
There is another pink lake (Lake hillier) in Western Australia in Middle Island. The lake measures approximately 600 meters long and is surrounded by a rim of sand and a luxuriant forest of paperbark and eucalyptus trees. The pink color of the lake is permanent and does not change color when the water is taken into a container.
