Más de un millón de personas, entre ellos
visitantes y locales participan en ella anualmente, se celebra del sábado
hasta el martes anterior del miércoles de ceniza. La temporada de
carnavales comienza el sábado antes de miércoles de ceniza, cuando comienzan
las fiestas públicas, sin embargo, otras actividades relacionadas con el
carnaval se realizan durante gran parte del año.
El nacimiento de carnaval de barranquilla
se dio en el siglo XIX, actualmente participan cerca de quinientas agrupaciones
folclóricas y genera aproximadamente cuarenta mil millones de pesos

Es un acontecimiento cultural que expresa la gran diversidad cultural que se encuentra en la costa Caribe Colombiana, así como sus grandes manifestaciones culturales locales, La música popular y el baile constituye el aspecto más representativo de la ciudad que cada año atrae a propios y extraños. Algunos de los disfraces más representativos del carnaval son la Marimonda (Original de Barranquilla), el Monocuco, el Garabato y el Congo. Son motivo de risa todo tipo de animales nativos y extraños, seres mitológicos, superhéroes y gran cantidad de personajes que trascienden muchos límites, personajes que son invenciones y ocurrencias populares. Algo que sin duda caracteriza el carnaval de Barranquilla son las mascaras del torito, el tigrillo y el oso, entre otras. Los disfraces satíricos y alusivos a sucesos de actualidad son motivos de hilaridad colectiva y gran causa de expectativa cada año

Por su variedad y riqueza cultural, el carnaval de Barranquilla ha obtenido gran cantidad de reconocimientos: Patrimonio Cultural de Nación, en declaración otorgada por el Congreso de Nacional de Colombia el 21 de noviembre de 2001, y Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad, concedido por la Unesco en París el 7 de noviembre de 2003.
