The town lies between the River Ij, north, and the banks of the Amstel River, southeast. It was founded in the 12th century as a small fishing village. However, today it is the country's largest city and a major financial and cultural center of international renown. The historic city center was built largely in the seventeenth century and is today one of the largest historical centers in Europe.
