3 Colombian Myths / 3 mitos colombianos

1 The Weeping Woman

Milagros Palma says in her book "The woman is a story," referring to the wildly popular myth:

"They say that the Weeping Woman  is the banshee of a woman stripped of her children, so her wandering tears. In some stories it is a crazy woman who could not stand her misery, killing herself and her children. Then her soul wanders villages, asking for their children and lamenting her tragedy ".

La Llorona is then, regardless of the circumstances and variants that each region has of her identity, a generic myth personifying a spirit of a mother in grief.

It symbolizes the punishment that comes to some parents who irresponsibly and without considering the consequences of their actions, they conceive children then evade their obligations, resorting to abortion, as if the creature to come was to blame for their mistakes.

Patasola

3 The Tunjo

The legend has it that the Tunjo is depicted as a golden doll. Some say they are small symbolic or divine idols of the "Pijao people"; others say they were gods or only offerings to their gods or their chiefs. The Tunjo appears at night as a harmless baby crying along the streets, crossing forests, a creek, through the ruins, abandoned houses or in rivers. If someone falls prey to the Tunjo, he will give you a good scare but nothing serious. In return, he will make you rich with mysterious fortunes. If the alleged "victim" ignores the Tunjo, this supposed abandoned "child" will follow  them (or will mount if the guy is on horse) and give them a terrible shock from which they will have to run or pray to escape.

Many years ago, in a small town in Mexico, all the people gathered in the church every year for the birth of Jesus to leave a gift.
A small boy named Paul just looked at everybody going and leaving their gifts but he had nothing to give; he was very poor and that made him feel bad. Paul wanted to hide to prevent the others seeing that he had nothing to give, so he went and hid in a corner of the church and began to weep, but soon a beautiful flower with red petals began to sprout from his tears that had fallen to the ground . Paul understood that the flower was a gift from God for Paul to give it to the baby Jesus. Happy he left his gift among the other gifts, but keeping the secret that this flower was born to his tears.

A story: A Christmas Gift?

Christmas celebrations evoke different feelings and interests in each individual, in this case, for an entire family, it was the perfect time to be together, they had always been very close and although they did not need pretexts to share experiences, Christmas gave a extra quality time in the company of family.
According to a very strong tradition they did not invite anyone to the dinner, it was a strictly family event. Everyone prepared a dish, and helped mom with the main meal; all placed an ornament made by them on the Christmas tree, with a piece of paper in it with a good wish for others. Once dinner ready, everyone sat at the table, after giving thanks, they ate each of the dishes. Joking among themselves how to cook, recalling past times, laughter and good times, they ended up with the last bite.
After a chat at the table, they prepared chocolate,  and sat by the fire while one of them passed to their father the presents with the pieces of papers with  good wishes hanging on the tree. After reading them they threw them into the fire, as they thought the smoke would take them to the Heaven. The next thing to do was to open the presents, first the youngest, and so they continued to the father who was the oldest. That night they especially noticed something different: when they had given all their gifts there was one left under the tree, nobody recognized it, but it was for them all. Thinking that one of their friends had left it in a visit, they opened it gladly waiting for a pleasant surprise. When it was opened, they looked puzzled:  inside the box there were a knife, a piece of cut sharpened metal, a wire and a note that said: "For those who are at the door ." They had no time to react as a chill ran through their backs when the doorbell rang.
