Las celebraciones por el día de la madre se iniciaron en la Grecia antigua, en las festividades en honor a Rhea, la madre de Júpiter, Neptuno y Plutón.

El origen del actual Día de la Madre se remonta al siglo XVII, en Inglaterra. Jarvis logró dotar al mundo de una celebración que hoy en día se festeja en cerca de 70 países.
